Text: Rowene Kerr Humphrey, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died May 13, 2004 in the Alta View Hospital from acute pneumonia at the age of seventy-seven. Her family was at her bedside as she peacefully ended her long and heroic struggle with years of ill heath.
Rowene was born in Payson, UT on August 5, 1926, the last of Franklin Raymond Kerr and Dora Openshaw's five children.
She attended Peteetneet Grade School and Payson Junior High and lived the life of a hard working farm girl during the Great Depression.
In September 1941, she moved with her family to Salt Lake City, where she attended South High. The next year Rowene got a part-time job at Woolworth's and worked her way up from clerk to head cashier.
She graduated from high school in 1944; since most of the boys who graduated with her immediately went into the Armed Forces, she learned to adjust to a world largely without young men.
She soon put her high school type and shorthand classes to use at the Beneficial Life Company in Salt Lake where she rose through various positions of responsibility while attending classes at the University of Utah.
In 1949, she moved to New York City with a good friend and lived the life of a big city girl. Although she enjoyed Manhattan's arts and culture, she returned to Salt Lake City after eighteen months to selflessly and cheerfully care for her suddenly ailing parents, something she continued to do for well over a decade.
On August 4, 1961, Rowene married the love of her life, Roswell Marlin Humphrey, in the Salt Lake Temple. After a happy honeymoon, the newlyweds moved to Provo, Utah, into a house large enough for Rowene's mother to maintain her own apartment in the basement, under the caring attention of her devoted daughter. It was there that she had and began to raise two children.
The family moved to Sandy, Utah in 1976, where they have lived ever since. Throughout her life friends and family members were delighted by Rowene's puckish wit, and they were inspired by her sense of social justice and her constant practice of self-education.
New acquaintances and friends were regularly impressed by her depth of knowledge in world history and culture, and European art, literature, and music.
Rowene was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many positions of service in it, always demonstrating the motto of going "the extra mile."
She is survived by her husband, her daughter Wendy (Chet) Caldwell, Sandy, UT; her son Daniel Humphrey, Rochester, NY; three grandchildren, Ashley, Carissa, and Devin Caldwell; and two sisters-in-law Colleen Kerr and Louise Kerr. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and a sister.

Text: Geraldine Humphrey Smith, 82, our loving mother, grandmother, sister, wife, and friend, died on December 28, 2012, in Salt Lake City, Utah, of causes incident to age.
Gerry was born on August 11, 1930, to Isaac Bailey and Twila Heiner Humphrey in Salt Lake City, Utah. She married Gordon Russell Smith on March 15, 1951.
Gerry is survived by her three sons: Bradford Smith of Denver, CO; Craig (Teresa) Smith of Springville, UT; and Darrell (Shauna) Smith of Salt Lake City, UT; as well as 11 grandchildren: Kyra, Cameron, Jordan, Taylor, Jackson, Samantha, Caitlin, Madison Best (Josh), Dillon, Bailey, and Hannah; and two great grandchildren: K'dee Dalton and Bailee Best. Also survived by two sisters: Darlene Anderson of Lakewood, WA; and Twila (Sam) Isaacson of Salt Lake City, UT; and one brother: Donald Humphrey (Mary Jane) of Lincoln, NE.
Preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Gordon "Gub" Smith, and two brothers, Ronald (infant) and Marlin Humphrey.
Gerry attended Salt Lake schools: Hawthorne Elementary, Irving Junior High, and graduated from South High School in 1946, and the University of Utah in 1951. She and Gordon moved into a new house in the Canyon Rim neighborhood of Salt Lake City in 1953 where Gerry lived for 59 happy years. Gerry worked for many years as a librarian in the Salt Lake School District at Backman Elementary, Rose Park Elementary, and Hawthorne Elementary-the same school she attended as a youth. She and her husband had wonderful life-long friends, including many they met while attending the University of Utah together.
Gerry's home was always a fun place to visit. Her friends and her sons' friends always felt welcome there. She was very supportive of and a great sounding board to her sons and grandchildren. She taught them the value of meaningful friendships, and the importance of being kind to everyone. Gerry loved summers, swimming with her family, flowers, decorating her home, the color purple, and how her beautiful glass ornaments glistened in the sun. Gerry was a long-time member and supporter of the Ladies' Literary Club of Salt Lake City. She enjoyed and supported the arts, and liked to travel, but most loved being with her husband and family. Gerry was a devoted daughter to her parents, a caring sister to her siblings, a loving and sensitive mother to her children, an involved and fun grandmother, and a loyal friend to her neighbors. She was a member of the LDS Church.
