Individual Note:
     Ernest Albert Shearer, 1871-1932, son of August Scherer and Jane
      Burlison. August was a German immigrant, born in Grunwinkel, Karlsruhe in 1844 – died in Harrogate 1898.
      Ernest Albert was registered at birth as Emil Scherer. As Emil Scherer he served in the British Army – Army
      Medical Corps with Kitchener’s Nile Expedition and later in the South African (Boer) War. After his military
      service he married Fanny Hannah Hall at Kidlington in 1906 having previously changed his name to Ernest
      Albert Shearer. All his children were registered at birth with the name Shearer. The name change was almost
      certainly prompted by the very strong anti-German feeling of the time. Ernest Albert’s children knew very
      little of his German roots.
