     Awarded a scholarship paid for by Lord Queensberry who visiting the family home in Westmead Road to collect some new shoes was impressed by Samuel's potential who was holding the carriage horses. Bombadier/Navigator Observer Buried along with P/O Roi SAUNDERS, Airman George PIRIE and Saunder's dog 01 - Observer on Benheim VI aircraft Code DX whilst serving with 57 Sqn RAF. All three crew were killed Originally buried in the German War Cemetary they were later transferred to the village cemetary. Crew: 70602 - Pilot Officer Roi Leonard SAUNDERS [aged 24] the son of Frank & Beatrice Saunders of St Albans. Herts. He always flew alongside his pet dog who was buried with crew. The dog's body helped in the identification of the bodies when they were transferred 626070 Airman George Ross PIRIE [aged 24] [wireless operator & gunner], the son of John & Jean Piree of Edinburgh, Scotland (Andrew Davidson)
